What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored fillings are what we use to fill holes on teeth, commonly caused by decay. Fillings are an example of a direct restoration, meaning a restoration that is fabricated, designed, finished, and polished inside the mouth. This is not to be confused with crowns, inlays, and onlays, which are classified as an indirect restoration fabricated outside of the mouth by means of a laboratory process or in-office milling.
When possible, we will likely recommend a filling before we would recommend a crown. Fillings are a great way to remove decay and cost-effectively restore your teeth back to their natural form and contour in a single short appointment. Quality of material and a good dentist that can achieve proper preparation techniques and isolation during placement are essential to providing you with a long lasting restoration. At our dental office, we are sure to use the best materials that are available and use the best techniques available to place your filling.
Tooth-Colored Fillings FAQs
Do you place white fillings or metal ones?
At Anderson Dental, we only place white tooth-colored fillings. Even though we believe dark-colored fillings, referred to as amalgams, to be a good and acceptable filling material, we have decided not to place them in our practice.
Should I get my metal fillings removed and replaced with white fillings?
Even though we do not place metal fillings, we do not recommend the removal of your metal fillings unless there is a problem with the filling. Redoing a filling for no reason can actually cause unnecessary loss of tooth structure and could contribute to future problems.
What about mercury in metal fillings?
Dr. Anderson’s senior research project during his undergraduate studies titled “Dental Amalgam and Mercury Toxicities” covered this topic. His findings were that removing a metal filling from your mouth would actually introduce you to more mercury than simply leaving it. Do not worry though, because dental amalgam, when set, is a very stable and safe material and emits almost undetectable amounts of mercury. That being said, if you are worried about mercury, you will be safe here. We only place white mercury-free fillings because we know most of our patients appreciate a natural looking restoration.
